About the Miniature / Toy Poodle
The Poodle’s reputation as a fashion dog is a late invention. Its French name comes from the word for a duck, and the breed was built to work water, retrieving wildfowl. Even the famous clip is practical: hair left over the joints and chest for protection, the hindquarters freed for swimming. Miniature and Toy Poodles are scaled-down versions of that dog, and they kept the brain.
This is the breed to choose if you actually want to train something. Poodles learn quickly, remember what they learn, and get bored when nothing is asked of them. A bored Poodle invents his own work, usually barking or shredding. Ten minutes of teaching a day will do more for your household than an extra walk.
The coat is the trade-off. Poodles barely shed, which suits families who dislike hair on the sofa, but that coat never stops growing. Plan on brushing most days and a professional groom every six to eight weeks; let it slide and you will be paying to have mats clipped off.
A Miniature suits a small house, a Toy is comfortable in an apartment, and both are content with up to an hour out of the door daily. Sensitive and closely tuned to their owner, Poodles do best with people who are around rather than out all day. Many pass their twelfth birthday in good order.
Origin, purpose and temperament follow the official FCI breed standard; exercise, grooming and family suitability follow The Royal Kennel Club (UK). Every puppy is an individual — ask us about the one you are considering.
Living with a Poodle in Cyprus
Dark coats and the sun. A black, brown or deep red Poodle absorbs far more heat than a white one. From June to September keep walks to the early morning and the evening, choose shade over open pavement, and carry water. A summer clip of two or three centimetres keeps the dog cooler without exposing the skin to sunburn, which a full shave does.
The sea. Poodles were bred to retrieve from water, and many love the beach. Rinse the salt and sand out of the coat with fresh water afterwards, or the curls mat within days. Dry the ears well too: Poodles grow hair inside the ear canal, and the humid coast makes ear infections more likely.
Grooming. A Poodle's coat keeps growing, so book a groomer every four to six weeks from the start. Puppies that get used to brushing, clippers and the dryer early are relaxed about it for life.
Apartment life. Toy and Miniature Poodles fit a flat well, but they are clever dogs, and a bored Poodle barks. Short training sessions, puzzle feeders and a daily walk keep them quiet neighbours. In sandfly season, roughly May to October, ask your vet about leishmaniasis protection; ticks are covered in our puppy care sheet.
